Hacking Electronics by Simon Monk is a short, but coherent and very practical introduction to making with a great information flow.
The content ranges from basic circuitry to advanced Arduino usage, gives detail to the required tools and contains a large number of experiments. They begin very simple but rise in complexity steadily. Also, most basic electronic components are presented. A very cool project is the Arduino-based device for entering passwords.
The chapter explaining energy and batteries is very valuable; i also use the book as a quick reference for using Arduino sensors. Hacking Electronics is well suited for beginners.
